Stitt Accepts Thunder Top Job

by on Nov.21, 2009, under Press Release

TSF

The Sussex Thunder is delighted to announce the appointment of Tony Stitt as the club’s new Head Coach.

To anyone associated with the British game over the past decade, and more, Coach Stitt will need no introduction. One of the all-time Britball legends, the former Thunder star, returns to his spiritual UK roots. Coach Stitt takes over with immediate effect from Coach Jim Roberson who has decided to retire from coaching.

In announcing the coaching change, Thunder Chairman Tony Miller said:
“When Coach Roberson joined last year, we always knew that it may only be a temporary appointment. We’d like to thank Coach Roberson for his efforts this past season and wish him all the best for the future.”

“Coach Stitt knows that we have been courting him for some time, and we all saw the amazing effect he had on our men when he acted as an assistant coach during our BAFL 1 Championship year in 2008. We cannot place a value on the knowledge, enthusiasm and values he will bring to the team , as you can tell we are absolutely delighted that Tony has agreed to come home to become the Head Coach at the Thunder.”

Coach Stitt commented on his appointment by saying: “This is role I have wanted for some time but in the past the circumstances have conspired against us. But when the role became available this time I had no hesitation in accepting. The time is right for me, right for the club and I can’t wait to get started.”

Commenting on the squad he inherits: “In 2008, when the club won the BAFL 1 Championship, I was lucky enough to be involved on a part-time basis. This past season, the team was more than competitive at the highest level. There is talent and youth in this squad and the only way is up.”

Coach Stitt has wasted no time in adding to his 2010 coaching staff. Thunder stalwart Paul Robinson, one of the few ever-presents on the Thunder roster since the club’s rebirth in 2003, will serve as Offensive Coordinator.

Re-joining after a two year absence is Malcolm Bamsey, who will take charge of the receiving corps. Malcolm was previously with the Crawley Raiders as a player and a player and coach with the Thunder.

Joining him will be Delroy Bryant, as the Defensive Backs coach who was a member of the all conquering London Olympians teams in the 90’s.

The Thunder will report back to pre-season within the next few weeks. Any players, coaches or volunteers who are interested in joining the club for their assault on the BAFL Premier in 2010 should contact the club via either eberkington@hotmail.com or bigtonym94@aol.co.uk.otherwise for sponsorship contact fraser-db.robertson@db.com.

The Thunder Youth squad is also preparing for its first season of BAFL Youth action. Again if you would like to get involved as a player, coach or staff member please contact the club at either of the above e-mail addresses.
