Thunder Take on an old Rival

This Sunday the Sussex Thunder travel to Ipswich to take on the 0-2 Cardinals. The Thunder will be after revenge for the last time this two teams met as the Cardinals squeaked out a last minute victory in 2011. Thunder Head Coach Ian Ellis had this to say: “Ipswich are a traditionally strong programme, but we have made significant improvements since winning the Bowl in September and will be looking for a victory to start the season”. A Brand new Look!

With training camp just a few days away and with a new home recently announced, we are pleased to unveil our updated website. The updated site makes use of new branding which will be seen across all of our PR for the new season and it is hoped that potential as well as existing sponsors will be as impressed by the new site as our new recruits. The site has been designed by our partner Black Ant Labs, who were very keen to re-develop the site in light of our recent successes on the field in becoming BAFANL Division 1 champions last season.

Head Coach Ian Ellis said “The new site has a clean feel, is accessible on mobile devices and gives the club a new look while retaining all of the features which were so popular last season including Thunder TV which had over 20,000 viewers”.

We are always looking to recruit players, coaches, back room staff and sponsors, so if you want to be part of a winning team, get in contact:

Football’s coming home

Sussex Thunder will begin their 2013 onslaught on the BAFANL Premier Division with a trip to last season’s strugglers Ipswich on May 5th.

That is followed by 2 home games, at their new home in Brighton where we will be playing at Brighton Rugby Club Waterhall lane. The first is a Saturday night game under lights on May 25th against South Wales in aid of The Children’s Trust. Following two exciting encounters with the Warriors, along with the added attraction of playing the game under floodlights only adds to the atmosphere, the decision to hold a charity game to mark the beginning of a new charity partnership with The Children’s Trust in Tadworth was made a very easy one, there will be some truly great prizes to be won on the day, so this will definitely be one to look forward to. Head Coach Ian Ellis echoed the feelings of everyone involved in Sussex Thunder by saying “We are always humbled to undertake charity games and this one being such a deserving cause makes you realise what really matters in life. The Thunder are proud to do our best for the charity and the community and I hope our friends and fans will come out to support this event”

The following Sunday, June 2nd, Sussex play host to one of the UK’s academy sides Bristol Aztecs, Bristol were a team that didn’t have things their own way last season in the Premier division so that again looks to be a tense match up, with Sussex looking to give a strong showing against a team that has become a bit of sleeping giant.

The following two games, away to Peterborough on June 9th, and home to Cambridge on June 16th are really two games that the team should be winning if their target of making the post season is to be reached, before seeing out June with a true test of character when they travel to play Vernon Kaye and the London Warriors on June 30th.

July starts off again with a game the team really need to win away to one of last season’s Division 1 surprise packages, Berkshire Renegade before facing another one of Sussex’s old adversaries London Olympians on July 21st then the home season finishes with a bang, playing 5 times (and current) national champions, and former EFAF Cup winners London Blitz. Then the season finishes off with a trip to the only team to beat Sussex twice last year, and historic county rivals East Kent Mavericks.

Everyone at Sussex is looking forward to the season, and the feelings are shared by Coach Ellis “I am confident after seeing the way the schedule is laid out that we can have another successful season which will be our first back in the Premier Division in 3 years.

We have an opportunity to renew old rivalries with the likes of the Blitz, Warriors and the Olympians dating back to the Late 90′s. We also get to play those team we competed with last year, which all in all should make for a good season. Practice is going well and the team is growing.

This should be another great season for the Thunder Organisation and our fans.”
